The great opposition in the art of dance is classical ballet versus contemporary dance. But there is also ballet that is neo-classical, which appreciates traditions but is at the same time modern. One homeland of this kind of neo-classical tradition is America. Three ballets will be performed at the Birgitta Festival that together form the composite programme Made in USA. These are the best examples of this artistic trend. The auteurs are three creators of dance who are associated with the USA.
Georges Balanchine, who was born with the name Giorgi Balanchivadze, needs no introduction to dance enthusiasts. “Dance is music made visible,” he has said, and with an elegant style of movement, he has written his artist’s name in history with golden letters. Serenade is legendary as his first work created in America, which changed the understanding of ballet throughout the world. Classical beauty in its full glory.
The auteur of the short ballet Sofa is Olivier Wevers, who is of Belgian origin and over the years has headed the Winnipeg Royal Ballet as well as Cascadia Ballet (Pacific Northwest Ballet). In recent times he has worked with his own company Whim W'Him. Wevers is a known master of style, and as befits the Belgian school, he manages to create an artistic generalisation by using everyday life as his point of departure.
The evening ends with Moses Pendleton and the MOMIX Company. Their stage production Lunar Sea – Noir Blanc is a mixture of ballet, visual theatre and multimedia. This stage production has been performed for enthusiastic audiences on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. This imaginative work is pure visual enjoyment.
