Don Alfonso argues with Ferrando and Guglielmo about the faithfulness of women. The two latter men are convinced that their fiancées are eternally faithful to them, yet Don Alfonso’s eyes flicker with the playful irony of a worldly man, eager to prove otherwise. This 18th century dispute between nobles has not lost its piquancy even today. And how could it?
“Opera is more important to me than anything else,” Mozart once said, and this must be true, as he wrote 18 operas. Cosi fan tutte is the most playful among them, a comic opera, or dramma giocoso. The Black Cat Opera Company, up-and-coming British opera co-operative presents us with a truly inventive and brilliant interpretation of Cosi fan tutte, one of Mozart’s main musical works.
