Verdi based the timeless opera not on a historical but a contemporary play. Alas, the work was censored as it was considered too provocative... Today’s "Traviata" creative team is not afraid to be brave and provocative and bring the everlasting love story to stage in modern setting.
“We followed Verdi’s lead, who in the beginning of the 1850s chose a daring contemporary subject matter for his new opera – Alexandre Dumas, fils novel La Dame aux Camélias. Although Verdi lost his battle to have the opera staged in contemporary setting, its shockingly straightforward subject matter was not lost on audiences. In the same way, we wanted to put the focus on a currently important subject matter… Nowadays tuberculosis is curable, our Violetta lives in the world of drugs.”
Anu Lamp, Stage Director
“The stage imagery has been inspired by Giuseppe Verdi who was drawn to the modern themes in opera. He stressed the need to follow Dumas in giving the opera a contemporary setting, but the censors of the time insisted that it should be set in the past. In Verdi’s spirit, our production of La traviata has a modern feel to it. The design of the opera is based on the concept of downfall and decay. The theme of fading fairness becomes especially relevant in the story of a fallen woman who is only valued for her external beauty. The sharp angles and brilliant surfaces of the set design are meant to form an urban background for the sinister costumes – and to bring to life the “crowded desert which is known to men as Paris.”
